What are hangovers?
Alcohol is a neurotoxin and is metabolized by most tissues, that is why toxicity affects many organs. It’s consumption has a wide range of effects on the body. Hangovers are accompanied by thirst, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, shaking, sensitivity to light/sound, dizziness, anxiety and in cases of heavy drinking nausea, vomiting, memory loss and a fast heart rate. Alcohol disrupts brain cell communication, stresses organs, and leads to dehydration and nutritional deficiencies. When the body breaks down alcohol it creates a toxic byproduct, called acetaldehyde, which is 10–30 times more toxic than alcohol itself, and if it builds up, you get the worst of the hangover.
Physiological consequences of alcohol consumption:
- Acetaldehyde buildup (toxic byproduct of alcohol)
- Dehydration and electrolyte loss
- Oxidative stress
- Inflammation
- Low blood sugar
- Disrupted sleep
- impairs B vitamin absorption and increases their excretion
- Alcohol irritates the digestive tract
How does After Party work?
After Party can help reduce the severity and duration of hangovers by supporting the body’s ability to:
- Detoxify alcohol and its byproducts (especially acetaldehyde)
- Replenish depleted nutrients (B vitamins)
- Reduce inflammation and oxidative stress
- Support liver function and hydration
- B vitamins support energy, brain function, and alcohol metabolism.
- Magnesium can ease headache, irritability, and promote relaxation.
- Cysteine helps break down acetaldehyde
- Succinic acid and fumaric acid are intermediates in the Kreb cycle (cellular energy conversion cycle), where it helps generate ATP (for cellular energy and mitochondrial function)
- Glutamine supports the gut lining integrity and immune health, it reduced GI upset and the associated fatigue
- Cactus extract has anti-inflammatory effects and has been studied to reduce hangover severity.
What does the cactus extract do?
Cactus extract was studied in a placebo controlled clinical trial, where young adults took the cactus extract 5 hours before drinking. This significantly reduced the risk of severe hangover the next morning, with especially nausea, dry mouth and loss of appetite being reduced. Cactus extract also reduced the production of inflammatory mediators.
When should I take After Party?
General rule: Preventing a hangover is a lot easier and effective than reversing a hangover (which is the symptom of intoxication). To most effectively reduce or avoid hangovers, it is best to take precautionary steps, 1-3 hours before starting to drink. Take 2 tablets of After Party with a glass of water before you start consuming alcohol. Taking NAC, magnesium and drinking plenty of water are also excellent strategies.
If you already started drinking, take 2 tablets of After Party
with a glass of water. Eat food and alternate alcohol with water.
After drinking it can be helpful to take 2 tablets of After Party. Similarly, providing the body with electrolytes, B-complex, vitamin C and potentially herbal liver support can be helpful. Avoid sugary hangover drinks because the often spike and crash blood sugar. Avoid caffeine alone, because it can worsen dehydration and jitteriness.
